Since the beginning of this year, Comyan has a full integration with the InDesign-based editorial system K4 of Vjoon in Germany (formerly Softcare). Within the framework of a project for Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ), who uses K4 for magazine production, both the integration for image production as well as the integration for archiving of all editions has been implemented successfully. Publishing of ePaper editions will follow within the first quarter.
Publications which are produced with K4 (e.g. NZZ Folio and “Bücher am Sonntag”) are exported as XML and PDF from K4 and automatically processed by Comyan NewsBench/MediaExchange. All data is transformed into the standard format of the Comyan Media Base and stored in the database.
Within the Comyan Editorial Archive, both individual articles and pages can be searched as full text and meta-data. For display, both the full text (HTML with highlighting of search terms) and previews are available. Articles, assigned images and pages are linked together. Links are taken from K4 wherever available and also - where not available - created by Comyan’s automatic algorithms. If required, archivists can later correct the links manually.
All the data within the Comyan Media Base is not only the basis for the archive: They are also the base for (automatic) publication of digital editions. The very successful ePaper by NZZ (also from Comyan) will therefore be completed by ePaper editions of the magazines soon. Additionally, it is possible to deliver the data to syndication partners (databases, agencies) from the very same database.
The integration of the image production was already completed in 2007. Image are searched and sent to production from within Comyan’s web interface. Comyan’s image workflow controls both the automatic image processing with Elpical Claro as well as the manual processing with Photoshop.
